WHEN WE GATHERED UP the robbers’ guns, the story became more sinister. At first, we told ourselves that the robbers shot Dupa’s father because he was sitting at the front of our group and they could easily assume he was in charge. When the bandits, who were outnumbered and outgunned, knew they were going to die anyway, they took down our leader with them and cut off the head of the snake.

But were the rogue bandits really acting independently when they eliminated one of Yeshi’s key enemies? By killing one of the leaders of the Small Reactionary Group, the bandits had done Yeshi a significant favor. While it might appear that stupid Khampa pride led to this day of sadness, shock, and disbelief, was assassination of Khuru Ngajam just an ironic accident of fate, only two weeks after our men caught Yeshi’s men looting yaks and violating CIA rules?

The evidence pointed in another direction. The weapons of these bandit Khampas were Chinese submachine-guns and Springfield rifles, exactly like the ones that the CIA issued to Yeshi and the Chushi Gangdruk. How did these men, who had just returned to the Mogum area from India, get CIA–issued guns? Although the bandits were camped in Mogum, not Mustang, Yeshi’s reach was far. I would also learn that one of the robbers came from the same district as Bawa Gyen Yeshi, and the others came from Yeshi’s neighboring districts.

Had the looters been another band of Yeshi’s jugche increasing Yeshi’s coffers by stealing from Tibetans? Although at the time, no one could have imagined that Yeshi would send men to steal from Tibetans, years later, it would surface that Yeshi had been robbing from fellow Tibetans by having his commanders collect a tariff of jewels and other valuables from all refugees attempting to cross the border from Tibet into Mustang.

Although we never had concrete proof of Yeshi’s involvement in the death of Dupa’s father, as history would reveal, when the ego-driven, jealous, and devious commander stood to benefit, he was inventive and resourceful. With no legitimate reason to attack us overtly himself, was the wily Cat capable of something more subtle, something that appeared completely disconnected from him and the Chushi Gangdruk?

With Yeshi, it was easy to see conspiracies everywhere. Had the Nepalese traders who took us to the bandits’ camp been Yeshi’s operatives setting us up for a gunfight with a band of Yeshi’s secret operatives? Had they worked together to lure our fathers into a trap—a gun battle where the objective was to assassinate both our leaders?

If so, Yeshi’s plot was only partially successful. Whether by accident or design, the bandits had severed only one head of the snake.

My father was still alive.

In the same moment that Dupa lost his father and Dupa’s mother became a widow, my father, Gona Gedun Sherab, now the sole leader of the Small Reactionary Group, abandoned our plans to head for India. From our base camp in the Mogum area, my father recommitted our group to fighting the barbarous Red Army.
